Corby Council's facing a one million pound shortfall in its budget after a major government grant
to the borough was withdrawn.

It's thought jobs and services in the borough will now have to be cutback more severely.

The grant was given previously over the lasty two years as a reward to councils who
increased housebuilding. It's been ended as part of a series of government cuts to
tackle the budget deficit.

The cut's on top of two and a half million pounds of savings that Corby Council had
costed for the next financial year - it's almost ten per cent of the authority's
budget.

A 16-year-old boy from Corby has been sentenced to four months in a youth detention unit and banned from keeping all animals for four years - after he admitted microwaving his brother’s hamster.

Kettering Youth Court heard on Friday how the hamster had to be put to sleep because of the severity of her injuries, which included her foot being burned to the bone. The boy pleaded guilty to the offence at a hearing in January.
