10th Anniversary Of The Trundle Barrel Race. (All Day)
Geddington will be rolling out the barrel again on 12 September, as the village celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Trundle barrel race. The day coincides with the annual Geddington Volunteer Fire Brigade (GVFB) beer festival, held in the grounds of The Star Inn.
Organised by GVFB, the Trundle is a timed race to push an empty beer barrel along a course from the Eleanor Cross, through the ford beside the medieval bridge, around the recreation field and back again. A number of challenges along the way test the teams’ ingenuity.
The winners receive the York Augustus trophy, named after York Augustus Hopkins who farmed in the village from late in the 19th Century. When the harvest was finished, York Augustus would send a barrel of beer into the fields for the men to enjoy and the Trundle is GVFB’s tribute to his generosity.

First run in 2001, the trophy has been competed for by many different teams over the years - ranging from pub teams and female hairdressers to rugby players in drag and the police. This year, GVFB anticipates a record number of entries - many of them in fancy dress. Anybody wishing to enter a team of four should contact Steve Brown on 01536 741185, Entry is free, fancy dress optional

Both the Trundle & beer festival starts at 12 noon, more than 12 Northamptonshire beers & ciders will be on offer, together with live music and other entertainment. Food will be available throughout the day, including a choice of meats cooked on GVFB’s legendary ‘Ludwig’ wood-fired roasting machine.

Valley Voice, (7:30 pm - 9:00 pm)
Valley Voice, the recently formed community choir based in Cottingham & Middleton is on the lookout for both new members and for a pianist to accompany weekly rehearsals and any performances.
The choir was formed earlier this year and is attracting a regular attendance of 25 – 30 singers, male and female, from the local area. New members are welcome to help swell the ranks so if you enjoy singing and would like to perform with others then this could be for you. The choir is aimed at adults of all ages and the emphasis is on making a good sound but enjoying it at the same time! The repertoire is a varied mix of popular songs both old and new and new material is added frequently.
The musical Director is Debbie Smith, an experienced choral tutor who runs two youth choirs in local schools. She is currently also fulfilling the role of pianist for the choir but this cannot be a long term arrangement as she needs to focus fully on directing the singing group. For this reason, as well as seeking new members, the choir would like to hear from a pianist who would feel confident to accompany a varied range of songs, sometimes sight reading parts for new material.
The rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 7.30 to 9pm in Cottingham Methodist Hall, though it should be pointed out that the choir is not religious in its nature. Weekly subscription fee is £2 per person and there is a small joining fee to cover essential resources.
Valley Voice are due to perform a couple of songs in a variety evening in October and have plans to sing at a range of small local venues over the Christmas period, so rehearsals over the next couple of months will be geared mainly towards those events.
For further details please contact Peter Smith on 07971 989081 or email psmith1309@supanet.com
